DeKalb: No swimming in S. River

DeKalb County is warning residents to stop swimming in the South River, which is polluted with fecal matter and industrial waste.

Residents have complained that they were not aware of the contamination and no signs were posted at a county recreation area near the river.

County officials told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday that the 73-acre recreation area is a bike and hike trail and not a beach. Signs are posted prohibiting access to the water, said Burke Brennan, a spokesman for the CEO.

“The state found high levels of bacteria,” he said. “The county posted signs because people were in the water. It is not intended for swimming.”

Police are patrolling the area and could fine anyone found in the river, Brennan said.
